The Caribbean Islands and Bermuda make for a great holiday destination almost any time of year – whether you jet off now to catch a winter tan, or visit as a start to your summer holiday. While the islands are well known the world over for gorgeous white sandy beaches and crystal clear seas, there’s more to the Caribbean than just sunbathing. Book your next Caribbean holiday with The Holiday Place, an award winning agency, so you can count down the days for guaranteed sunny skies.
Grab Some Grub:
If you’re a fan of Jamaican food at home, you’ll be in for an absolute treat anywhere you go in the Caribbean. Every island’s cuisine is a gorgeous blend of indigenous, African, and colonial flavours and dishes to enjoy – from Spanish-inspired Arroz con Pollo to goat stew. One of the best parts of island hopping is that the recipes differ from island to island due to different cultural influences – so a Cuban chicken will taste different to a Jamaican barbeque. If you’re in a coastal town, take the time to enjoy some delicious fresh seafood, or check out a local rum distillery to enjoy an authentic cuba libré or mojito.
Play Pirates:
Although little remains of the swashbuckling fantasy of the Disney movies, there’s loads of amazing history to check out in all the islands, which kids will love. In spite of the dark histories of colonialism and exploitation on these islands, locals are friendly and willing to share their history – some great points of interest include the Barbados Museum, which boasts a fascinating collection of maps used by pirates and includes a children’s gallery. The island of Bermuda is amazing in itself – known in the 18th century as ‘The Devil’s Island,’ it boasts plenty of pirate history, and the port of Bridgetown is now home to a popular pirate cruise.
Catch A Carnival:
There’s absolutely no experience on earth quite like a Caribbean carnival. Held in the height of their summer, every carnival is full of lively local music, stunning parades, dancing, and spectacular costumes. Trinidad Carnival, held in February, is the product of months of buildup and preparation and is truly one of the highlights of the year celebrating Trinidadian life to the soundtrack of catchy Calypso music. Another great music festival is the Bacchanal Jamaica, held in April every year, where local performers come out to play and showcase the amazing diversity of genres on offer all across the country. If you’re planning a trip in the summer, head out in August to celebrate the 182nd anniversary of the abolition of slavery in Antigua, where the festivities last a whole week.
