Even though my son is 6, I still find myself needing Help in the parenting section. Part of me atributes that to having to work so much for the early part of my son’s life. My schedule was crazy -and I worked 7 days just so I could support my husband (now ex) and my son and myself. Lil C stayed home with his daddy or with his grandma or grammy while I was away at work. Being my first child, I didnt fully have the parenting learning curve. I tried to do my best – and I often asked for help. I even tried to wrap my head around many parenting books – but they were so far different from how I grew up, That it just made no sense. Now, here we are and I am getting ready to work on combining families… And Asking agian for help. Thankfully I have been given the opportunity to look through the Christian Parenting Handbook – and I think I finally found one that I will be able to follow.

What got me was the First Chapter: Consistency Is Overrated. Finally someone who is telling me that it is okay for one offs. Everyone says that Consistency is the most important thing when it comes to raising a child. But, So is Everyday Life Experiences. Sometimes a great learning lesson goes against what would be consistent. There are many other great chapters as well, that I can add into my current day, Such as: Transfer Responsibility for Change to the Child, Parenting Is an Investment—Think Long Term, and The Difference Between Tasks, Problems, and Conflict. And for the day that I gain a 12 year old Step Daughter, Chapters like “It Takes Two to Argue, but Only One to Stop”. While reading through this chapter, ONE scenario stuck out to me. ” When Amanda is asked to get on her pajamas and responds with, “But I’m not tired,” Mom may say, “Amanda, you need to obey first, and then we’ll talk about it.” After Amanda obeys, then a discussion about bedtime can take place” I will agree not many realize that even a child who is 5 or 6 may need to discuss things – and believe that “im the parent I say so” This is something that I am trying with my son. I have tried both ways – and so far the “big boy” Discussion has worked when it comes to showing a result. I haven’t put all the practices into motion yet. I am taking it one chapter at a time – and day by day. I recommend this for Every Parent – New and Old

I have found that my 4 year old needs to discuss things. We do not argue, but he does feel that he needs to be heard. I keep catching myself from stopping him from telling me his side of what is going on. I think listening is a big part of parenting too. I will totally check this book out. Thanks for sharing.
