Young people can often become fascinated by the workings of the occult and magic. While, for the most part, this can be harmless, it can still be a good idea to ensure you know how to keep your teenager safe if they wish to experiment with beliefs or ideas, even if they may seem fantastical in nature. Their reasoning behind the practice may also need to be uncovered as it may also be a sign that they are struggling in some areas, such as with bullying at school, or even with trying to find their own identity.

Experimenting with the occult is not necessarily a bad thing, unless it causes harm or negative emotions. Some people find that particular aspects of the occult can bring about feelings of anxiety, particularly in some rituals akin to what you may find in horror movies. By educating your child on the safety aspects, they can still have their freedom, but also the knowledge of what is safe and real.

Fortune Telling

One aspect of the occult that young people may be interested in is the ability to predict the future. Some individuals, known as mediums, offer this service, either in person or online at websites such as mediumchat.com. This can allow you to do a little bit of research beforehand, and help steer your child in a safe direction. By using online means, this also gives them a little more security, rather than meeting a stranger in a potentially private location. Teaching your child that, no matter the result, they still hold the power to make decisions in life, and to not take the reading as gospel, is a good way of instilling responsibility and security in them.

Ouija Boards

Some youths like the idea of potentially being able to communicate with the dead or other-worldly beings. This is generally advised against, although not for the reason that many believe. While you won’t make contact with ghosts and ghouls, the use of Ouija boards has been documented to cause mass hysteria, with the stress and mental strain bringing on symptoms in numbers of people, that they then attribute to possession. Warning your child of these psychological factors, and attempting to dissuade the idea, can be a good step forward. If your child is adamant, make sure they are secure in the confidence of their own mind, and to reiterate that any feelings are more likely to be caused by anxiety, stress, or even the excitement, as opposed to demonic manifestation.

Rituals

Many occult believers use rituals as a means of worship, thanks, or prayer. While many of these can be harmless, it is important that your child understands that some use blood rituals. These may involve cutting one’s own skin to deposit blood at the ritual site. This can be a highly dangerous practice, and lead to hospitalization or infection. Due to this, any rituals that include blood should be avoided at all costs.

Even though there are dangers, some occult practices can be safe. Tarot readings, having crystals for protection, and even meditation can be non-harmful ways that your child can delve into occult practices without risking their physical or mental wellbeing.
