If you remember a couple weeks back I mentioned about how ConAgra Foods teamed up with Feeding America to bring our children a Hunger Free Summer.   With summer vacation starting through the whole US, we really need to think of the children.Hunger-Free-Summer

Last week, I received an email from my sons school reminding the parents of the summer lunch program that they offer.  When I heard about it last year, I thought, “Wow, why are they doing that? It didn’t make any sense to me… Until I participated in this campaign.  I never really realized how many kids go with out food during the summer.    This prompted me to take a few moments to talk to lil C about such a thing.  We talked about how he was lucky and got to have hot lunch every day at school when I lost my job.   He never thought anything of it, he thought that it was cool, but never really knew the reason why – until we talked today.    This conversation made him ask may questions – especially about the other kids who got free lunch.   When I told him that there were so many kids that went with out food during the summer, because their parents couldn’t afford the extra meals, he started thinking of things that we could do to help some of the kids out.  His Logic, is the logic of a 7 year old, and sometimes doesn’t make sense… But he did have a great idea!

Here are some other things that you can do this summer to help ensure a Hunger Free Summer:

  • Volunteer: While providing meals is a top priority, fun activities are also important in attracting children to feeding sites. During the summer, volunteers can help transport food, help an existing feeding site with lunch preparation and clean-up, or do activities with the children. Visit www.feedingamerica.org to find a nearby food bank in need of volunteers.
  • Advocate: To find meal sites in your area, call the National Hunger Hotline at 1-866-3-HUNGRY (1-866-348-6479).
  • Learn: To learn more about the issue of child hunger, visit www.childhungerendshere.com and click on the “tacking action” tab.
  • View, Like or Share This Video (shown below) with your friends, family and on your social media.  For each action, the ConAgra Foods Foundation will donate the monetary equivalent of one meal to Feeding America, up to TWO MILLION Meals!(1)

Make sure you follow the  “A Childlike Summer,” on the Feeding America Pinterest Page!   There are many great ideas on Children’s Summer and how to help ensure a Hunger Free Summer.

I love his idea! We have several food pantries at the churches around us, and I never thought to donate to them! From now on though, it’s where every extra fruit or veggie from our garden will go!

Great post. I love that Conagra is doing this for children. No child should go hungry and this is such a wonderful program. Our school didn’t send any info home about this, but they really should implement this for children. I’ll have to speak with the principal and PTA about it next year. Thanks for sharing!

We have a food program for the summer at my school. We have so many needy children who depend on school for food. Thanks for sharing this valuable info.

As a disabled woman who is raising a grandchild, I depend on those lunches. Oh, we could manage without it , but this is a chance to have a well balanced meal. I am very thankful for the program.

I love that the school has that available! I know a lot of needy children get forgotten during the summer months- it’s great that schools are getting involved as well as companies like ConAgra.
