We have been trying to find new meals to eat. You can only eat the same foods so many times before looking for a change. Sometimes the easiest change to a meal is switching up brands of ingredients you may use. And that is one thing that I did. I found the Mezzetta Marinara Sauce and was quite intrigued with the flavoring they had. I picked up a couple jars of Marinara Sauce and Some of the Mild peppers for this weeks dinners.
A little about Mezzetta:
• Simple. Fewest, freshest, finest ingredients.
• Rich. The world’s best tomatoes – hailing from the rich soils of Italy’s San Marzano region.
• Real. All natural. No sugar. No paste. No shortcuts.
And did you know? Mezzetta is giving away an 11 day trip to Italy?
When I was trying to find out a suggestion for a meal, I talked to my mom. My mom came from a family of 6 children. She told me about one of the meals that she grew up eating. She keeps reminding me that growing up she didn’t know that they were “poor” they just grew up living the life they lived. So they use to have something called “Daddy’s Special”
A “Daddy’s Special” was a Makeshift Pizza. It was made from hamburger buns, Pizza or Marinara Sauce, Cheese and Hot Dogs. Pepperoni was too expensive for a family of 6 when she was growing up.
This is actually quite an easy meal to make. And even when shopping without coupons, it is quite inexpensive to make. I chose to get a shredded cheese blend – with Mozzarella and Cheddar cheese. You can choose which ever cheese blend you wanted. I figured each hot dog would cover 2 Hamburgers worth of “hot-dog-ronies”.
How to Create Daddy’s Special with Mezzetta Sauce:
- Pre-heat oven to 350
- Grab your hamburger buns, and split them into 2 halves.
- Spread your Marinara Sauce – I used 2 teaspoons of Italian Plum Tomato on each half.
- Sprinkle your cheese of choice on top of the sauce.
- Slice your hot dog into thin slices and place your preferred quantity on each
- Place on a baking sheet – and in the oven for 10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted
These came out with the “crust” having a little crispness to it, but the inside was still soft and bread like.
I did have some of the left over Italian Plum Tomato Sauce from this nights dinner, So the next night I choose to make traditional Spaghetti. This time I choose to use the Whole Garlic and Sweet Basil Marinara Sauce, mixed with the half jar of Plum Tomato Sauce. Shhhhh Don’t tell the hubby. He thought I slaved over the hot stove for hours trying to get the Garlic and Basil Flavoring in our traditional Meat Sauce.

These are some great ideas for when the grandkids come on the weekends because I am tired of making large meals that they do no like and will not eat.
