Even though I am not a first time Mom, trying to make sure you have everything that you need can be quite overwhelming. I remember when I was expecting Lil C. Financially things were tight, bu we were able to make it work. I know that is the case for many new moms. That’s when I came across The Baby Box Co. They are carrying on the Finnish tradition – of making sure that a new mom has all the necessities. The Baby Box Co. sent me a Baby Box for Peanut.
The Tradition behind Baby Box Company: “For 75 years, Finland’s expectant mothers have been given a box by the state that serves as a starter kit for their new baby. It contains clothes, blankets, and other newborn necessities, and the box itself–which is lined with a mattress–can even be used as the child’s first bed. It is believed that these baby boxes have helped Finland achieve one of the world’s lowest infant mortality rates. The tradition dates back to 1938. In the 1930s, Finland was a poor country and infant mortality was high, but the figures improved rapidly in the decades that followed. The contents of the box have changed a good deal over the years, reflecting changing times. During the ’30s and ’40s, it contained fabric because mothers were accustomed to making the baby’s clothes, but the fabric was replaced by ready-made clothes in the ’50s.” (The Baby Box Co)When the Baby Box arrived, I was quite surprised in the size of the box – Even though I did look up the dimensions before it arrived. According to The Baby Box Company’s website; this box measures 70 cm long, 43 cm wide, and 27 cm tall (27.5″ tall, about 17″ wide and about 10.5″ tall). As you can see above, there are a lot of great items that were included in my Baby Box.
The box itself is actually a bed – with a mattress. And it is not just a thin mattress, it is actually a couple inches thick. (My pack n play mattress is way thinner). I love the fact that it is portable. I actually have taken this box to work with me on the weekends for Peanut to sleep in. (Yes, peanut does go to both of my jobs with me). It is just the perfect size to keep on my desk – that way I can always keep an eye on her.
This box was loaded with a bunch of essentials – Including an Aden + Anais swaddle, safety kit (Which is super helpful to have), Onsies, Socks, Mitts and Headbands. Unfortunately Peanut’s head is still tiny – and the headbands are a little big on her. I cant wait for her to be able to wear them!
I really love the idea behind the Baby Box. You can find The Baby Box Company on Facebook and Twitter.
Update: She now fits the headbands (at 5 weeks old) and the Onsies that were sent!

Magnificent! I love that box! The stuff that comes in it is neat too, but the whole idea is wonderful.
I love this box and the history and inspiration behind it. I also like that the box is not only reusable, but also doubles as a bed. Oh, and the box itself is just adorable. I want one and I don’t even have a baby! This is something all new parents should have and makes for a perfect shower gift. Thanks for sharing. I’ll definitely keep this in mind for our next baby. 🙂
