SEA LIFE has over 250 species and 2,000 creatures including sharks, rays, green sea turtles and more! Journey through the Great Lakes all the way to deep ocean depths where you’ll meet all sorts of amazing underwater life. Touch a starfish or other rockpool creature at SEA LIFE’s Interactive Touchpool. Then explore an incredible Underwater Ocean Tunnel that houses thousands of fish from around the world who swim overhead while you watch in amazement from below- it truly feels like being under water yourself!
Think about how huge the 120,000 gallon Ocean Habitat is and how many incredible sea creatures you could see in there! It’s truly an experience like no other. As if it couldn’t get any better, though, there is an 180-degree underwater tunnel to walk through. The tunnel has all sorts of gorgeous tropical creatures and makes for a perfect photo opportunity. Kids love being so up close and personal with the animals.
Speaking of up close and personal, you’ll also love the Interactive touchpool. You can actually touch creatures like starfish, stingrays, and anemones! To be any closer, you’d need scuba gear!
If you love the elegant movement of stingrays, you’ll especially like to watch the 3 species of stingrays: southern stingrays, Atlantic stingrays, and cownose stingrays that SEA LIFE features. I could sit there for days just watching them peacefully swimming along in their underwater habitat.
Are sharks your thing? In July, SEA LIFE Michigan is themed shark week! It’s a great time to get to know 7 species of sharks: black nose shark, black tip shark, brown banded bamboo shark, white spotted bamboo shark, dogfish shark, nurse shark, and the bonnethead shark. They are available to see and learn about at other times of the year, too, but during Shark Week these amazing sharks are especially celebrated.
The green moray eel is one of the most interesting creatures that there is at SEA LIFE Michigan! This mysterious creature has a way of moving through the water and mesmerizing everyone who sees it. Did you know they can grow to be 8 feet long? The resident eel, named Jeff, is 6ft in length and lives with other amazing sea creatures such as bamboo sharks so make sure not to miss them while visiting the Stingray Bay exhibit.
Seahorses eat three times every day to stay full – maybe you will spot one in the middle of a snack during your visit! Learn amazing facts about seahorses, including that male seahorses give birth. SEA LIFE Michigan is part of a global breeding network for these endangered species around the world and they are doing their best to protect them from extinction!
Scientists believe that jellies first swam in our oceans around 500 million years ago! They are older than all of our ancient reptiles. There are more than 350 different species and at SEA LIFE Michigan, you can see enchanting moon jellyfish!
And we can’t forget the Michigan freshwater exhibit. Local fish and creatures are featured here. You and your family will be amazed by what is living in your own backyard! It’s pretty awesome to learn about their habitats.
SEA LIFE Michigan isn’t just a cool place to see things though; there is also lots to learn. It’s a great place for field trips and to enhance homeschool curriculum. The daily educational talks and feeding demonstrations offer so much information that you’ll have to go back more than once to do it all!
Throughout the day, there are different educational talks and demonstrations for different age groups. For example, you can have breakfast with the two rescued green sea turtles, Benson and Carr, or bring the little ones to Story Time where they can hear their new favorite underwater story!
SEA LIFE Michigan is a great place to bring the entire family. It is ADA-accessible and has something for everyone to see. It’s also a great place to have a birthday party! Don’t forget to stop at the gift shop to get an awesome souvenir on your way out!
