We’re all taught from a very early age not to believe everything you’re told. When it comes to health and beauty products we are sold miracle upon miracle in wonder treatments for everything from bags under our eyes to aging skin and body treatments.
Beautiful people and science are common vehicles for selling these products because somehow consumers are naive enough to believe the hype when all manner of scientific jargon is used to describe the miracle healing powers of a carrot or insect limb.
We look at the beautiful people and believe deep inside that this product will make us look and feel like they do, but even deeper inside we know this is not true.
“So where is this going in relation to adult toys?” I hear you ask. Well it is no secret that these types of products are now widely available in stores, and of course online, where they are often on display alongside many of the aforementioned products. You walk along the lotions and moisturizers aisle, turn the corner and there you see the condoms, lubes and various vibrating electronic devices. Twenty years ago, you would stare with gaping jaws at such a display were it in your local pharmacy, before hastily looking the other way before anyone notices.
The difference between adult toys and the science and beauty products is that many sex toys have a fiercely loyal support base in the mainstream who swear by their guaranteed success rate. That’s right. Celebrities are often quoted in the media as proud owners and sex toys are often handed out as gifts between girlfriends who simply want their friends to enjoy the same pleasures that they do. The list of celebrities is no Z-list former glamour model catalog either. We’re talking Missy Elliott, Madonna and those lovely ladies from Sex and the City.
Without any personal experience, one can’t really make a call, but you can feel pretty confident that this trend is not a passing phase. New technology, particularly in the vibrator department is all geared up for discreet toys for the busy professional. Some examples include butterflies, bullets and eggs, to name a few of the smaller and more discreet vibrators. Then you have the ultimate accessory for the travelling business woman call “The Duet”, which is a discreet USB vibrator that provides for both sexual needs and comes in 8GB and 16GB sizes.
While the names for these products may sound like the stuff of fantasies, the results they produce are very real indeed. Now for fear of sounding like a door to door salesman, let’s look at the science and math behind the success. The sex toy industry has reportedly grown by 30% a year and a survey in the UK by Ann Summers and The Sun News paper found that more than 50% of UK women owned a sex toy.
According to (a referenced source in) Wikipedia, in the US, research published in a 2009 issue of the Journal of Sexual Medicine found that about 53% of women and about 46% of men in the United States ages 18 to 60 have used a vibrator. You could argue that it’s safe to assume that sex toys are pretty main stream and no longer carry the stigma they did in years gone by.
This brings us back to the point of this article which questions whether it’s all hype or whether there is something in the rumored “guaranteed orgasm” that some (not all!) sex toys can bring. While there is no scientific evidence to support the claims of guaranteed orgasm, there is certainly no shortage of ambassadors to the joys of owning such a device. There is an old and proven track record for good old fashioned “word of mouth” being the most effective means of making a sale. When all your girlfriends are raving about their “little friend” it becomes difficult to contain your curiosity and one can assume that for something so private and intimate to make it into the public domain, it must be special.
In today’s online world it is easier than ever to satisfy your curiosity and you can rest assured in this modern day and age that your purchase will arrive in discreet packaging. If you do decide to take the plunge, make sure you do your research and read up about sex toys and make sure you refer to trusted sources. A great place to seek advice is from the more trusted suppliers like Adulttoyshop.com as well as any number of forums where like minded women come together to discuss everything from sex to recipes.
Oh, and one more thing… If you’re done researching and you’ve made your purchase, don’t forget to clear the browser cache on your computer because the last thing you want is your spouse or heaven forbid, one of your offspring stumbling upon a “recently closed” browser window!

Sounds like a lot of options out on the market these days. I’d definitely have to clear my cache since I share my desktop with my kiddos! LOL Yikes. =)

This makes absolutely no sense at all. Your spouse is going to see the sex toy anyways when it shows up at the house, so why bother trying to hide it on the computer?
More importantly, if you feel the need to hide sex toys from your spouse, then you’ve got more serious issues in your marriage than worrying about whether your spouse knows that you visited an online sex store.

Carly, you really hit the nail on the head there – “More importantly, if you feel the need to hide sex toys from your spouse, then you’ve got more serious issues in your marriage than worrying about whether your spouse knows that you visited an online sex store.”
I wholeheartedly agree. The only way I think it would be beneficial to clear cookies is to that your teenagers can’t see where you’ve been!
