A gritty, white-knuckle, action ride set in the near-future where the sport of boxing has gone high-tech, Real Steel stars Hugh Jackman as Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next. When Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son Max (Dakota Goyo) to build and train a championship contender. As the stakes in the brutal, no-holds-barred arena are raised, Charlie and Max, against all odds, get one last shot at a comeback.

Recently I was giving an opportunity to screen Dreamworks SKG’s new movie Real Steel staring Hugh Jackman, Dakota Goyo & Evangeline Lilly. I seen the trailers and thought it looked preety cool…come on fighting giant robots what guy doesn’t think that is awesome. So the movie opened slow showing Charlie (Jackman) driving his truck thru the country side with a slow but good song playing as the credits appeared. But the as soon as the first Robot Battle began the movie kicked into high gear. The movie theater roared with cheers  making you feel you were right there in the crowd at the fight. I heard one person shout out ” Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots” at one point and couldn’t help but laugh.  The sounds from the robots as they walked and fought was awesome made better from the theater sound system….so this movie is totally worth seeing in theater. Real Steel story is a great one and everyone can connect with from the underdog who no one believes he can win to the Father-son story to a former great boxer making a comeback makes this movie a great family movie. This movie will make you stand up a cheer for Atom, Charlie & Max. If you can, make sure you get your tickets and see this one in theaters, don’t wait for the DVD cause you’d be missing out. Real Steel is scheduled to be released in both conventional and IMAX theaters on October 7, 2011. Below you will find some interesting facts about the movie:
  • Real Steel is directed by Shawn Leavy who also directed the “Night at the Museum” franchise & “Date Night.”
  • The film was primarily film in the state of Michigan and featured such places like include the Renaissance Center, the Cobo Arena, the Detroit Fire Department headquarters, the Ingham County Courthouse, and the Highland Park Ford Plant.
(**Me being from Michigan & living here all my life gave me a great connection and appreciation for this film.)
  • Real Steel is based on the 1956 short story “Steel” by Richard Matheson

All opinions expressed above are those of the Authors.  He received tickets to an early viewing to facilitate his review.  Giveaway is sponsored by DreamWorks.
