Food Allergy Awareness Week: Its Not a Joke!

Most Kids are worried that if they tell their parents they have been bullied by others, it will get back to the bully and he or she will just make it worse.

Most Kids do not believe that an adult can help them with the situation they are going through because it is not happening to the adult.

They believe that they are the only one or that they some how deserve this treatment because they are different from every one else.

As Parents, we need to teach our children that it is ok to be different and it is ok for their friends to be different. We need to teach them to ask questions and not to be afraid of some thing they do not understand

As Parents, we need to be there for our children when they need an ear to listen or a shoulder to cry on and we especially need to be there when they need us to step in and help set things right.
As a child or as an adult, the  concept of life threatening can be overwhelming and scary. The ideal that you have to take a needle and jam it in to someone to save their life can be scary . Some people react with shock, some with jokes, some with nastiness.

Children watch how their parents react to different things and that is how they then react when they see something different. We have a responsibility to our children to teach them to react with kindness rather than nastiness.

I have actually had conversations along this similar vein… It still amazes me when certain people ask me if he will ever “grow out of his allergy” or “if giving him a little bit will build a tolerance” My son is 4, we have known about his allergy since he was 4 months old. I am not going to subject him to something that I know will make him sick just to make someone else or their child feel better about themselves.

Of course it would be easy to give up just milk… but what about everything else that goes along with it? Same concept goes for most allergens. People fail to realize that children do not understand these concepts and taking it out on an innocent child will not help the problem.

My apologies if I have come off in a bad way to anyone. I do not mean to offend, just to educate.
